Start as a phony, until you become real.

None of us starts out knowing who we are.
What we will stand for.
Who we will become.
We are all trying to figure it out.

We learn by copying others.
Copying doesn’t mean imitation.
Copying doesn’t mean stealing someone else’s style.
Copying doesn’t mean plagiarism,
Or passing someone else’s work off as our own.

It means learning to see the world in new ways —
Through the world views,
And mindsets,
Of those, we aspire to be like.
Our hero’s,
Those we want to model,
Those people we idolise.

And how do we do that?
What questions do they ask?
How they invest or spend their time?
The portfolio of work they have produced in the world, and how they have come to create this? What was the process behind it?
What models, methods, and frameworks do they use?
What beliefs do they have?
What are their musts?
What are their values?
What resources do they use? How resourceful are they?
What are their standards in life?
What are their principles?
What is their life about?

“To invent your own life’s meaning is not easy, but it’s still allowed, and I think you’ll be happier for the trouble”.
Bill Waterson
