My Favourite Bedtime Daily Ritual?
To read fiction while in bed, right before I go to sleep.
Snuggled up in super comfy sheets, with the cat in tow, obviously.
Why?
To prime my brain for interesting and exciting dreams by escaping to a private, personal fantasy land of mine and the author’s creation.
To eliminate blue light from electronic devices; which are on flight mode, so I’m not interrupted or tempted to get caught up in mindless scrolling or social media.
To reduce stress (hmmm, interestingly this correlates with less social media…).
To increase the production of melatonin — our sleep-inducing hormone.
To increase my intelligence and IQ by using my imagination to vividly picture what I’m reading.
To increase focus and aid concentration by focusing on the book and practising single-tasking (not flicking back and forth between several things at the same time.
“Reading is thinking with someone else’s head instead of ones own.”
― Arthur Schopenhauer, The Art of Literature
When we read, we stimulate the areas in our brain responsible for empathy, emotion, decision-making, and memory.
There are so many fantastic reasons to read fiction at bedtime!
